Vétheuil and its region have always attracted many painters particularly inspired by the grandiose landscape of the loops of the Seine and the Vexin countryside: Monet, Manet, Sisley, Renoir, Caillebotte, Pissarro, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin,... Later, they will be followed by Braque, Suzanne Valadon and Utrillo, Vlaminck, Foujita, etc...
Four painters have left their mark on the village of Vétheuil: Claude Monet, Joan Mitchell, Jean-Paul Riopelle and Abel Lauvray. They had one thing in common: they all lived within a hundred meters of the church and - for three of them - represented it a lot.
Jean-Paul Riopelle and Joan Mitchell met in Paris in 1955. In 1959, they moved together into Joan's rented studio on rue Frémicourt in the 15th arrondissement of Paris.
